What happens in treatment?

A detailed case history is taken on the initial appointment focusing on the area of complaint, previous problems and information about the state of the patient’s general health.

The patient will be asked to undress so the osteopath can observe the area of complaint, for example if it is a neck, shoulder or back problem them the patient will be asked to remove just their top, if it is feet, knees or hips the patient will be asked to remove their trousers. If the patient would feel more comfortable to wear shorts or a vest top they are welcome to do so.

The standing posture of the patient is examined and some simple movements performed. This helps with diagnosis and determining the contributing factors. If any special test (e.g. reflexes, blood pressure etc) are required they will be performed before the treatment. Exercises may be given, and any advice the patient is interested in, e.g. work posture etc.

Treatment of babies.

Treating babies is slightly different, they are requested to wear something comfortable for treatment and bringing any bottles, toys or dummies is encouraged incase the baby is restless during treatment.

What can be treated?

Whilst back and neck pain are the most common problems seen, the list below illustrates the wide range of conditions suitable for treatment:

The above list is by no means exhaustive, so if you are unsure whether osteopathy can benefit your condition please call.
